Just 20 minutes before ringing in the new year, 16-year-old Scott Kologi killed his parents, sister, and his grandfather's partner in his Jersey Shore home.
Scott used a Century Arms semi-automatic rifle to kill his parents Steven and Linda Kologi, his 18-year-old sister, Brittany, and 70-year-old Mary Schulz, who was his grandfather's partner. Scott's brother Steven and their grandfather Adrian were also home but not injured in the incident.
According to reports, the gun belonged to someone in the family, but no further information on the gun's owner has been released. Scott Kologi was charged as a juvenile with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
The teen's grandmother, Carole Kologi-Zawacki, was distraught upon hearing the news, and her husband, Gregory Zawacki, revealed that Scott is autistic. He added that the family was not gun enthusiasts and he was surprised there was a gun in the house.
Scott is expected to appear in court as early as Tuesday (January 2).
