The St Andrew North police are searching for a man who managed to escape their grasp after they were stoned by residents in Cassava Piece on Saturday night.
Reports are that about 11 p.m., members of St Andrew North Divisional Intelligence Unit were on an operation. Head of the St Andrew North Division, Superintendent Aaron Fletcher, said the police observed the man among a group of persons acting suspiciously.
"It was also observed by a member of the team when the man pitched an object in the Cassava Piece Gully. The police acted swiftly and held on to him while two of the officers went into the gully and conducted a search, and the firearm, a 9mm pistol, was retrieved," he said.
Fletcher said upon realising what was happening, a group of citizens started throwing missiles at the police and during the melee, the suspect escaped. No lawman was injured during the attack.
An extensive search for the suspect proved futile. Fletcher said that events like the one on Saturday just show the state of social decay in society.
"This type of behaviour is being facilitated by influential players in our society who have little or no regard for the rule of law," he said. "This man is someone who is a violence producer and is known to the police.
He was actually charged by the police before and was, or is, reporting on conditional of bail.
It is advisable that he turns himself in to the police because if does not, we will be unrelenting in our efforts to apprehend him."
