A prisoner who reportedly attempted to disarm correctional officers of their service weapons after they took him to the hospital has been shot and killed.
The Department of Correctional Services said the inmate, who was housed at St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre, had complained of chest pains and was taken to the hospital on Saturday.
"While there, the inmate attempted to disarm the correctional officers of their service weapons when an officer's firearm was discharged hitting him in the abdomen.
The inmate was undergoing surgery for his injuries when he died," the Correctional Services said.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Independent Commission of Investigations have launched separate investigations into the incident.
