A 16-year-old girl who reportedly set fire to her mother’s house in Norwood, St James, on Monday morning, after her cellphone was taken from her, has been arrested and charged by the police with Arson and Malicious Destruction of Property.
Reports by the police are that on Monday morning, January 27, the 42-year-old woman who is a vendor and resides at Shanty Town, in Paradise Norwood, scolded her daughter over her behavior, and then confiscated her cellular phone before leaving for work.
About 10:30 a.m., their neighbor saw the teenage girl setting fire to her mother’s house, and she immediately called the police and the fire department.
One unit from the Freeport Fire Department visited the location and discovered the three apartment concrete structured house on fire.
The firemen worked quickly in getting the fire under control and put out the blaze.
Following the cooling down operation, they observed that a section on the inside of the house was destroyed by the fire, as well as, furniture and appliances.
The damage is estimated in the regions of over $400,000.
