Hospital Denied Mother's Claim About Daughter Getting Pregnant While A Patient

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The St Ann's Bay Regional Hospital is this evening refuting claims made by the mother of a 27-year-old patient that her daughter was impregnated while she was in the hospital's care some time ago.

In a statement a short while ago responding to the claims made during a newscast on CVM News Live Evening Edition on Tuesday, the hospital said that based on the timing of the young woman's pregnancy she could not have become pregnant while in their care.

The hospital argued that in the newscast, the mother stated that she is uncertain of where her mentally ill daughter became pregnant and indicated that her daughter was a patient at the St Ann's Bay Regional Hospital on or around the time she became pregnant.

However, the hospital challenged the claims saying that its investigations revealed that the patient was admitted to the hospital on May 26, 2018 and was discharged from the facility on July 8, 2018.

It noted that the expected date of delivery, based on ultrasound readings is April 2, 2019 with the variance of an expected delivery date being plus or minus two weeks.

“Consultation with our senior obstetrician/gynaecologist revealed that based on the foregoing, the calculated date of conception would be during the week of July 21, 2018, approximately two weeks after the patient's discharge from the hospital,” the hospital reasoned.

It said an invitation was subsequently extended for the mother to come in and talk to the Hospital's management team, however, she has been unable to meet the appointment that was set.

Notwithstanding, the hospital said other efforts will continue to be made to meet with the family.

“The St Ann's Bay Regional Hospital would like to reaffirm the public that the security of all our patients, especially the most vulnerable, is of utmost importance and taken very seriously,” the institution said.
