Gay Man Who Chopped Lover's Head And Put in Rice Bag; Sentenced

A gay man who was found guilty of killing his lover of 10 years, will be sentenced on December 9. The man, Howard Ricketts, was convicted of murder in the St Ann Circuit Court earlier this month.

Ricketts and the deceased, Burnett Thomas, were in an intimate relationship for 10 years. However, the relationship turned deadly after a third man, Neville Lewis aka Garnett, accused Thomas of infecting him with HIV.

Information released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions indicate that the men were at their house in Brown's Town, St Ann when an incident happened. The incident took place about 4 a.m. on March 25, 2012. Ricketts, in his unsworn statement, said he knew Lewis between late 2011 and early 2012.

He said that on the morning of the incident, he observed Thomas and Lewis arguing and this took them from the bedroom to the living room.

Rickets said he saw Lewis use a machete to chop Thomas in the left side of his neck. He said Lewis told him that he had to take part in the act. At that time Rickets said he was crying, but he assisted Lewis to pull Thomas to the bedroom and placed him on the bed on his back.

Ricketts then inflicted stab wounds to chest and intestinal area with a machete.

Lewis used the machete to sever the head of the deceased and placed the deceased man's head in a rice bag. On the day when he was charged in April 2012, Ricketts, when cautioned he said "offica a di bwoy Garnett cause this pon mi. A him seh mi fi help him and look wah happen".

According to THE STAR, Lewis pleaded guilty to murder on May 26, 2014.
