Police in Houston say a 19-month-old toddler was burned to death by her family’s oven after she was left home alone, the NY Daily News reports.
On Tuesday morning, around 12:30 a.m., police officers responded to the Angel Ridge Apartments and made the horrifying discovery. Authorities said the children, who had been left home alone at some point, were playing with the oven and the toddler’s body was found right next to it, the report notes.
The child’s mother and her boyfriend were located and questioned, but then released. The toddler’s grandmother, Gina Dennis, spoke out to KPRC-TV and said, “She was a sweet baby. This is unexplainable. I have no words.”
The toddler and her other siblings ages 3, 3, and 5 were all reportedly at home alone when the victim, identified as J’zyra Thompston, died. Reports say the children’s mother left her kids home with her boyfriend so she could go to work. It’s not clear where the boyfriend was at the time of J’zyra’s death.
Child protective services in Texas have since removed the children from the home and put in protective custody. At this point, no charges have been filed.
The next custody hearing is scheduled for Dec. 2.
