Video Surfaced With Chinese Packaging Fake ‘Milo’ in Jamaica

Chinese in Jamaica packaging fake ‘Milo’ in back room. Milo Jamaica has responded quickly to an amateur video that is in circulation on social media website Facebook showing what appears to be people of Chinese descent putting a chocolate powder in Milo packaging.

The 31-second video shows at least three persons a small room packaging a powdery substance with the use of a sealing machine. The finished product is packaged in what appears to be Milo packages, similar to the ones on the market locally.

Shauna Kidd, corporate communications and consumer relations manager at Nestle Jamaica, told the news team that company had taken steps to negate any potential fallout from the video.

“We have posted comments and notices to our website and to our Milo Facebook page advising consumers that the products on the shelves are different as well as another post will be made today on how consumers can differentiate the products,” Kidd said.

Nestle Jamaica said that the video was originally posted in Nigeria, and it did not depict the quality and care that Nestle takes in the manufacturing and packaging of its products.

“We have no reason to believe that any examples of the products shown in the video have reached Jamaica.”

The news team understands that complaints and backlash from consumers reached fever pitch between Tuesday and Wednesday, a few hours after the video was posted on social media.

Garfield Dixon, marketing and public relations manager at the Bureau of Standards, told the news team that the agency was not aware of the video.

“It’s the first we are hearing about it. We haven’t heard anything,” he said.

He said, too, that the authenticity of the video would have to be verified, and until then, the Bureau would not comment on the matter.
