Students Urged to Wear ID's As Gang Members Now in School Uniforms

The police will be contacting schools in St Catherine to have their male students wear valid school identification cards. This is as a result of an upsurge in criminal activities involving males dressed in school uniforms.

The initiative was revealed at a news conference at the Spanish Town Police Station yesterday.

According to Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, the police will be writing to the schools, and requesting that the students wear proper identifications.

The police revealed that persons have been killed, robbed, and maimed by persons, who were reportedly dressed in school uniforms.

"We have noticed that even last month two boys in school uniform shot and killed a worker in the bus park along Burke Road. This is not an isolated incident. We intend to start contacting the schools immediately," she said.

The police also said its investigations reveal that gang members are targeting and recruiting schoolchildren to be involved in crime.

Lindsay said that although the changes will affect students, it is just a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Anthony Powell said that the current joint operation going on in Spanish Town will continue as they try to bring normalcy back to the Old Capital.

On Thursday, a number of persons were taken into police custody after security personnel swarmed the bus park along Burke Road and the surrounding business district. The operation is a joint effort between the Jamaica Defence Force and the police from several divisions including St Thomas. Young men were also seen being escorted into waiting police vehicles.
