26 Gang Members Charged Including Mother of Newborn Baby

A lactating mother, who just gave birth, is among the alleged members of the deadly Uchence gang that the police have linked to numerous murders, rapes and other serious acts of violence across the island.

In fact, the police have alleged that while being heavily pregnant, the woman, Tashina Beckford, aided the criminal network to carry out some of its illegal operations.

She was hauled before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, along with the other alleged members of the gang, but was fortunate to be the lone accused who was granted bail, because of her particular maternal situation.

All other alleged members of the gang were remanded in custody until January 10, 2018, when they are to re-appear in court.

Beckford was charged for knowingly obtaining a benefit to a criminal organisation.

The gang was dismantled during operations conducted in St Catherine, Clarendon and the Corporate Area on Saturday, December 2, in which 15 key players were taken into custody.

Another 11 suspects were otherwise arrested, making a total of 26 of the roughly 40-member outfit now charged. These include three females and two members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
